Beginning March 31, we are slowly going to be building up packs for off-leash walks. Please see below for more information.
WHAT IS A PACK WALK?
A pack walk is a structured group walk designed to provide dogs with exercise, socialization, and mental stimulation in a controlled and safe environment. At Stay Wild Dogs, our pack walks take place in private, fully fenced dog parks, ensuring a secure space for the dogs to interact and move freely without the risks of public off-leash areas. Each walk lasts one hour, though dogs may be out of the house for 2-3 hours, depending on pick-up and drop-off times.
Unlike a casual off-leash play session, a pack walk is structured to help dogs build confidence, practice recall, and engage with other well-matched canine companions in a positive, consistent, and controlled setting. We focus on creating a harmonious group dynamic where each dog feels safe and comfortable, promoting a calm, well-balanced experience.
WHAT TO EXPECT DURING A PACK WALK
Dogs will be introduced to the pack gradually, one at a time, to ensure positive interactions and prevent overwhelming situations.
All new dogs start on a long lead to practice recall and engagement before being allowed more freedom.
Walks are structured to include a mix of loose-leash walking, recall practice, and controlled socialization to build confidence and reinforce good behaviour.
Group sizes are intentionally kept small to ensure a safe, stable, and enjoyable experience for all participants.
Dogs will be picked up and dropped off at their homes, with total outing time ranging from 2-3 hours.
EXPECTATIONS FOR DOGS
Not all dogs are suited for pack walks. The best candidates for our pack walks are:
✅ Dogs that are well-socialized and enjoy being around other dogs.
✅ Dogs that are friendly or neutral toward other dogs and people.
✅ Dogs with no history of aggression or serious reactivity toward people or dogs.
✅ Dogs that are comfortable traveling in a vehicle without excessive stress.
✅ Dogs that have basic recall skills or are willing to work on them.
✅ Dogs that do not excessively guard toys, food, or space from other dogs.
✅ Dogs that can be safely handled by a professional dog walker.
Dogs that are not suitable for pack walks include:
❌ Dogs with a history of aggression, intense reactivity, or extreme fearfulness.
❌ Dogs that do not enjoy the company of other dogs.
❌ Dogs with severe separation anxiety that struggle with pick-ups and drop-offs.
❌ Dogs that are excessively possessive over toys, food, or space, posing a risk to other pack members.
❌ Dogs that cannot be safely handled by someone other than their owner.
Being honest about your dog's temperament is crucial to ensuring a successful experience for everyone. If you are unsure if your dog is a good fit, we can arrange a one-on-one assessment before they join a pack walk.
EXPECTATIONS FOR DOG OWNERS
Commitment is key. Owners must commit to at least one walk per week on a consistent day. Dogs thrive on routine, and keeping the same pack members together helps them form strong bonds and feel comfortable.
Vaccinations must be up-to-date. Owners must provide proof of rabies and core vaccinations before their dog joins a walk.
Health and hygiene matters. Dogs must be free from illness, fleas, ticks, and parasites before attending a walk.
Honest communication is essential. Owners must disclose any behavioural concerns prior to participation to ensure a safe and positive experience.
Leash, collar, and gear requirements: Dogs must wear a secure, well-fitted collar or harness. No retractable leashes.
Drop-off & Pick-up Protocol: Ensure your dog is ready for pick-up at the designated time. If your dog is not available, please notify us in advance.
HOW WE INTEGRATE NEW DOGS INTO THE PACK
Introducing a new dog to the pack is done carefully and gradually to ensure all dogs feel safe and comfortable. Our process includes:
Pre-Walk Assessment: Before joining a pack walk, we will discuss your dog's temperament, behaviour, and social skills to determine if they are a good fit.
One-on-One Introductions: Each new dog is introduced to pack members one at a time to ensure a smooth transition.
Long Lead Training: New dogs start on a long lead to practice recall and engagement while adjusting to the group dynamic.
Supervised Interaction: I closely monitor all interactions and adjust introductions as needed to ensure a positive experience for all dogs.
Gradual Off-Leash Freedom: Once a dog demonstrates reliable recall and comfort within the group, they will be allowed more freedom to roam within the fenced area.
Consistent Routine: Keeping a regular schedule allows dogs to develop strong relationships and feel confident with their packmates.
By maintaining structure, consistency, and positive reinforcement, we create a safe, balanced, and enjoyable environment where dogs can thrive. Pack walks are a great way to build confidence, reinforce recall, and develop positive social skills while ensuring that all dogs feel secure and supported.
